UGASTOVE (former: Urban Community Development Association (UCODEA))

Mission

UGASTOVE's mission is to improve the socio-economic condition of the urban poor by engaging them in sustainable, innovative, environmentally friendly economic activities. The project is based on pilot work in 2005 by the Urban Community Development Association of Kampala, Uganda (UCODEA). A stove manufacturing business with the name UGASTOVE Ltd. was founded on the basis of this pilot work in 2007. The stove subdivision of UCODEA began as a family business by the Kawere family as early as the 1980s. When the Kawere family decided to make stove building an organized business, they focused on two concerns: 1. stove business and 2. waste management. The stove business has since gained the support of other partners with similar interests in energy and the environment. We are currently implementing a two-year pilot project funded by the USEPA to develop the market for improved stoves in Uganda. This project is co-managed with Center for Entrepreneurship in International Health and Development (CEIHD).

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Build awareness about the benefits of improved stoves and explore ways community women can become more involved in disseminating improved household energy technologies.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Catalyze production of high-quality wood stoves in a low-income urban neighborhood; develop a marketing network of community women; and create a plan for scaling-up production and distribution.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Bring a high-quality product to market that offers urban families the opportunity to burn wood easily, safely and efficiently

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Measure the indoor air pollution impact of using the chimney-less rocket stoves by surveying the common cooking practices and devices being used in urban Ugandan homes.
