Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

In order to enhance adoption and utilization of efficient cook-stoves, Tembea undertakes education, community sensitization and awareness creation to address health, livelihood and quality of life. Through regularized usage surveys, qualitative data collected and analyzed help in addressing the socio-cultural concerns/needs of the target beneficiaries/community.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The cost of energy cookstoves is relatively high. Hence, most of the targeted households cannot afford them. In attempt to enhance demand, uptake, and adoption, Tembea has incorporated a local capital mobilization strategy called "Community Savings and Loaning (CSL)" that is based in the villages where the project operates. The innovative village-based savings and loaning groups enhance affordability and access to efficient cook stoves through soft loans; in addition, the training of households in usage and maintenance of the cook stove and campaigns to raise people‘s awareness concerning renewable energies and energy efficiency increase uptake.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Tembea have not ventured in this area to authoritatively make a comment, however, we take into cognizant that continuous innovation as well as testing of technology in use assist in stove improvement based on the 10 principles of biomass energy efficient cook-stoves.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Through regularized usage surveys, primary data is collected from various randomized stove users to address stove-client satisfaction. The data collected is also used in stove improvement and education to the households.
