*Pottery for Public Health" covers two of the issues of contaminated water and polluted air, along with environmental considerations. Pottery water filters that are treated with a tiny amount of silver, help prevent water borne illnesses. Pottery eco stoves (rocket stoves), when properly placed and not indoors, help prevent respiratory illnesses. These rocket stoves cut the fuel needs to a bare minimum.

Our Focus
Pottery water filters are gravity fed, with no other energy implicit. These have gone into production and use in Nepal, Kenya and Indonesia. The potteries in which the filter systems are under production have also been trained in production of pottery rocket stoves.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
In Nepal, school water systems, in which the pottery filters candles have been built-in, are in use in 800 rural schools. In Kenya the pottery water filters have been placed in 700 homes in a large slum, in most of which there is HIV-AIDS.
In Kenya the pottery filter systems are subsidized for sale to those of low income, at US$7.00 per system. For those that are not on subsidy the price is $40.00.
Variations on rocket stove design may always be present, while proving to be very beneficial. One attribute of our pottery rocket stove conforms to that of the original developers, and is the insetting of the pot into an optimized diameter. So for example, a cook pot of 30 cms. diameter is inset into a stove opening of 32.4 cms. Thus there is a 1.2 cm. gap around the pot, and very little heat energy is lost.
For many years I personally have lived in Africa and in Southern Asia, in close proximity to neighbors who cooked with smokey, indoor fires, and would come outside coughing.
