Sierra Carbon Solutions

Mission

I am a public health student in Queensland Australia. I would like to undertake a PHD on the effect of improved cook stoves in the lives of women and children in Africa. In preparation for this project I have developed an Improved Cook Stove that runs on waste cooking oil or ethanol from the waste glycerin from biodiesel production. This project takes into consideration all the barriers that can affect such projects in Africa in terms of technology and sourcing the fuel.

I entered the stove in a New Inventors program in Australia and the demonstration of the stove can be viewed at the following link: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/newinventors/txt/s3158363.htm

I am interested in setting these stoves up in communities in Africa with the aim of teaching the locals how to build the stoves and make the fuel. I hope to be able to study the effect of the improved stoves on the physical, social and psychological health of the communities where they are installed.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

I hope to make my stoves available to most people in sub Saharan Africa. The emphasis will be on removing all dependency on fire wood for cooking and relying on renewable energy resources.

Fuels/Technologies: Alcohol Fuels
Crude biodiesel
Sectors of Experience: Health
Renewable Energy
Small Business
Water
Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Countries of Operation: Sierra Leone

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Some of the main issues that will be addressed in this project will be self sufficiency and empowerment of local communities to address their energy needs in a sustainable way, as well as creating an understanding and appreciation for their natural environment and its dwindling resources.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

I hope to be able to develop a market for some of the fuels used and locally constructed stoves.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

In most developing countries the lack of technological know how can hinder the wide scale uptake of innovation, which was the motive behind the simple design of the stove, so it can be easily replicated locally and any repair work can be done locally. It is an appropriate technology for any developing community.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

I do not have any experience in indoor air monitoring.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

I would like to help communities build these stoves and even develop their own fuels for the stoves.
