Three billion people – half the world’s population – are regularly exposed to indoor smoke and toxic pollutants through the burning of coal and biomass used for cooking and heating their homes. Indoor air pollution is ranked fourth in the list of serious health threats in developing countries, and the problem is growing.
The Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) Awards Program recognizes organizations committed to improving the health, livelihood, and quality of life, particularly for woman and children, by reducing exposure to indoor air pollution from household energy use. PCIA will recognize exemplary programs in two categories: Global Leadership Award and Special Achievement Awards.
The PCIA Global Leadership Award recognizes programs which have incorporated the four priority areas proven to be essential elements of sustainable household energy and health programs and achieved noteworthy results. Winners of this prestigious award serve as models for other programs striving to increase the use of clean, efficient, affordable, reliable and safe home cooking practices throughout the world.
What are the key elements?
PCIA will also recognize Partner organizations which have achieved positive results in each of the following key elements categories:
For dedication and innovation in working with local communities to raise awareness about indoor air pollution and clean and efficient cooking alternatives.
For creating a sustainable commercial supply and implementing exceptional commercial strategies for increasing the use of clean and efficient cooking technologies and/or fuels.
For ingenuity and commitment to improve the design and manufacturing of clean and efficient cooking technologies.
For dedication and investment to demonstrate the important health, social, economic, and environmental benefits of clean and efficient cook stoves.
The PCIA Awards Program is open to all members of the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air. Partners that have incorporated all four of the essential elements of sustainable household energy and health programs in may apply for the PCIA Global Leadership Award. Partners who have achieved success in one of the essential elements are encouraged to apply for a Special Achievement Award in that area.
Receipt of the PCIA Global Leadership Award is a sign of excellence and recognition of success in achieving the Partnership’s mission to improve health, livelihood, and quality of life through reduced exposure to indoor air pollution from household energy use. Special Achievement Awards acknowledge commitment and accomplishment in one of four essential elements of highly effective and sustainable household energy and health programs.

PCIA will honor award recipients at a ceremony during the 5th Biennial Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Forum in Lima, Peru on February 21-26, 2011. A travel scholarship will be given to one representative from each award-winning organization to participate in the 2011 PCIA Forum.

Application for all award categories will be accepted by email through November 29, 2010. Applicants will be notified by January 10, 2011. Please register for the 2011 PCIA Forum prior to submitting your application.
