Practical Action aims to demonstrate and advocate the sustainable use of technology to reduce poverty in developing countries. Practical Action's energy programme aims to increase poor people's access to energy technology options, through improving the efficiency and productivity of biomass use, and through small scale, low cost, off-grid electricity supply. We closely work with communities to help them to develop technology options which are appropriate to their needs. Currently, Practical Action is supporting scaling-up of successful indoor smoke alleviating technologies through awareness creation, revolving funds and marketing strategies. We are also active in pollution and health monitoring. Practical Action is also running advocacy programme to create favorable policy environment to alleviate IAP.

Our Focus
Pratical Action in Nepal has planned to support 21,000 vulnerable women and children living in six districts in achieving improved health conditions as a result of creating improved indoor air quality, household sanitation, safe drinking water and clean household energy by 2012.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
By using Participatory methods, Practical Action avoids social / cultural barriers as people themselves select the ways in which they would like to alleviate smoke.
Practical Action is working to esblish a market-based institutional delivery system of IAP alleviating technologies. To create demand, our focus is on awareness creation, credit facility, increase access to quality and smooth supply of products and income generation. To ensure supply, focus is on credit facility, training on manufacturing and business management, and support in marketing strategy.
Practical Action in Nepal tests the efficiency of the stoves in terms of fuel use, smoke reduction, and green house gases, etc. We are tyring to establish a quality control mechanism in each project site to ensure supply of high quality products and after sales services.
Monitoring has been completed in Rasuwa (a project district) using particulate pumps and CO monitors, personal breath CO monitors and spirometry. The project is also using questionnaires and impact monitoring.
