Pal pauper Care Foundation

Mission

Palpuaper Care Foundation seeks to establish itself as a centre of excellence for the provision of essential services in the areas of education and counseling, including vigorous promotion of the use of modern cultural practices in agriculture and agro-business and educating people on health care matters. Our interest in household energy has led to a behavior change in that area. The problem of indoor air pollution, if not well managed, will definitely lead to health hazards like pneumonia, persistent coughing, asthma and tuberculosis. In Ghana now, because of mining of petrol, there is a lot low pressure gas. We are in consultation with district assembly to educate the community to resort to the usage of LP gas which is cheap as against charcoal. We are also insisting that the use LP gas should be an outdoor policy.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

We have been able to initiate an afforestation programme and so far we have planted about 25,000 economic trees. We are however targeting that by the year 2030-2050 we should be able to export some of these trees to foreign countries. It is an urban/rural initiative on a small scale of about 50 hectares. Since some of the trees have been planted as woodlots the community will however benefit from it as firewood and charcoal.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Since lack of education is a major social/cultural barrier we have therefore initiated a vigorous educational plan through the local chiefs and the people in use of traditional fuels and stoves.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Of late the market development for improved cooking technologies has improved tremendously in terms of price and availability of the product.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We are in collaboration with district assembly in educating the community in the use of LP gas and construction of houses with good ventilation as installation of heat and smoke detectors as well as fire.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Instituting of bye-laws by the district assembly and personnel of both the Ministry of Health and the Environmental Agency will be doing the monitoring.
