CENTER FOR MISSIONARY AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT(CEMCOD)

Mission

CEMCOD exists to enhance holistic grassroots development through Appropriate Technology. We work with community leaders to make rural development happen with locally available resources. We have provided training workshops on Rocket Stoves and biosand water filters for 85 people from 5 different communities on the Mambilla Plateau of Northeast Nigeria. These were aimed at promoting clean burning and efficient cooking and heating so as to reduce carbon emissions and deforestation from burning solid fuels.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

We are gradually overcoming the initial resistance to this new method of using Rocket Stoves and biosand filters. This was achieved through sensitization and mobilization of community leaders and other relevant groups.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Workshop attendance is based on a subsidised registration fee with emphasis on micro enterprise development. Many of our participants are now building stoves for commercial use with encouraging results. One young boy in particular was able to pay his school fees by selling stoves.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Our emphasis is on using readily available materials such as mud bricks, river sand, gravel, agricultural waste and many others so as to provide quality products. The Rocket Stove enhances complete combustion and heat transfer efficiency thereby minimising smoke emission. Our biosand filter is built with technical precision to provide safe water. We provide hands on assistance to ensure quality products for our clients.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

An evaluation and monitoring team has been set up to provide on the spot assessments of operations in the field. This arm is limited, however, by a lack of funding to execute their roles.

Relevant Publications or Studies

Still in the making as we are not in a hurry to tell our stories.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

Our hands on assistance will be made available upon request. We will send in reports when due. We will promote PCIA's program within our realm of influence.
