Aprovecho Research Center

Mission

Aprovecho is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that since 1976 has been disseminating and studying stoves and household energy in general. Today we have 7 consultants and a well equipped laboratory. The research center runs a school for 14 interns who take a semester course in organic farming, sustainable forestry and appropriate technology. Dr. Larry Winiarski, Technical Director, heads efforts to bring modern engineering design principles to NGOs building stoves around the world.

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Let women design the function of the stove then improve effectiveness as possible.


Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Selling stoves in Honduras in marketplace.


Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Always best to use chimney but if not possible try to encourage cleaner combustion and outside cooking.


Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Writing Stove Manual for Partnership that will include 1.) emissions from popular stoves 2.) exposure to cook from same stoves when cooking standard meal 3.) fuel use, turndown, efficiency at high and low power. Available February 2005.
