Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis, Paul Scherrer Institute (LEA-PSI)

Mission

I am currently working on a project called IMBALANCE which looks at assessing the economic and climate impacts of biomass combustion. I work with (and have been involved with myself) field researchers investigating typical european biomass appliances.

Aerosol Scientist, measurement and characterisation of combustion and secondary organic aerosols, health and climate effects

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

No input

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

No input

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

My previous focuses have included emission reduction technologies (ESP's) and development of standard testing practises for their usage, along with investigations into best practises emission reduction techniques for utilisation of domestic heating appliances. I have also shown that care should be taken when using a TEOM in conjunction with ESP's as highly charged particles create measurement artefacts.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Vehicle emissions: Fleet testing CNG & diesel buses, analysis of nanoparticle nucelation from diesel engines, testing of emissions from in-use marine biodiesel
Atmospheric emissions: Secondary organic aerosols - simulated and in field (influence of organic coatings on seed aerosols)
Biomass Emissions: Testing of various automatic (pellet) and log wood oven with a wide range of high end instrumentation. Characterisation of these emissions
Health Impacts: Collaborating on development of a "simple" test for determining toxicity of wood smoke
Agricultural Emissions: Relationship between dust and odour and dust and pathogens from intensive farming practises (poultry)

Our Contribution to the Partnership

I'm happy to offer advice & my experience on aerosol & gas testing methods and instrumentation. Further to this I have a developed interest in health impacts, environmental impacts and environmental economics
