KEAN aims to bridge the development and partnership gaps in the on-going effort to alleviate the health and environmental burdens of air pollution. Apart from designing and producing state-of-the-art improved cooking systems, KEAN initiates or promotes partnerships that work to expedite the achievement of goals. KEAN has a goal of reaching 500,000 households and 3000 institutions over the next three years with the most appropriate technologies for reduction of fuel consumption and indoor air pollution. This represents approximately 10% of the total need for improved household stoves in Uganda and 4% for institutional, according to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral development.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
Some challenges still exist, such as people's attitude to change. Quite a few people in Uganda, for instance have a belief that food cooked over a wood fire tastes better. While this cannot be proved scientifically, it can be a barrier to introducing the improved technologies. KEAN will endeavor to sensitize communities on the negative effects of the smoke from ineffient wood burning systems.
As more and more people are getting increasingly aware of the improved cooking technologies, the challenge that remains is the purchase price of the technologies. KEAN hopes to address this challenge by investing in automated production systems that will enable bulk production at a lower cost. The economies of scale should help lower the prices and hence better market penetration. KEAN also intend to include the community as a partner in the identified efforts of market development.
KEAN appreciates the need for continuous improvement in designs of the improved cooking technologies to ensure more efficiency and cleaner burning. We hope to set up community feedback systems to guide our R&D efforts towards maximum acceptability.
Members at KEAN have had training in IAP monitoring and the risks of exposure. We hope to put our exprience to practice by designing feasible monitoring schedules to guide our designs towards compliance with generally accepted local and international health standrds.
