Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Rakai Women's effort to save the environment promotes the use of solid waste for renewable energy development by increasing the production of charcoal briquettes with an aim of reducing indoor air pollution and pressure on the environment for the urban and peri-urban poor especially women and child-headed households.This is entails the provision of simple recycling machines, micro credit, marketing links and organization of exbitions, litter week campaigns and competetitions.

RAWESE plans to reach out to 7822 women and 100 child-headed households affected by the HIV/pandemic in Kyotera Town Council and 4 other sub-counties of Rakai District that registers the highest number of households affected by AIDS through improved indoor air quality by 2015

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

The promotion of solar cooking is a positive step towards fighting negative cultural barriers about men cooking in Uganda as it is a living proof that demonstrates clean energy. This integrated approach increases self esteem amongest households using solar, men now cook and serve themselves with solar foods.


Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Market development starts with the formation of communication and awareness committees at village level to spear head marketing, adaption and adoption of best practices. The capacity building of solar cooker representatives and agents trainers. demostration are done during public gatherings , planned events, nutrition and immunization days and trade fairs.


Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Policy formulation at local council level in collaboration with line departments of health, community services and education to enhance community knowledge and skills on potentials of renewable energy and reduction of fuel budgets.


Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

- Increased productivity in farms, businesses, schools etc because of time saved
- Savings on fuel budgets
- Direct and indirect employment opportunities
- Reduced cases of ailments related to water and smoke
