Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE)

Mission

Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE) is a registered society whose mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of communities through environmentally benign technological interventions. Among other projects,TIDE has worked extensively with rural women to create new income generating options through construction of smokeless household stoves. A gender sensitive, demand driven approach using a non subsidy based entrepreneurial model has been adopted. The stove that is being disseminated is a two pot stove with a single fuel feeding port. It is simple to build, maintain and use. Local materials including, mud, bricks, a cast iron grate and a chimney are used. Thus, it is affordable by all sections of society. Since it is smokeless, it has led to an improvement in the indoor air quality of the households, further leading to improved health. These stoves have been installed in more than 3000 households in Karnataka.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Traditional stoves emit smoke in the kitchen, causing discomfort for the members of the households. Women are particularly unhappy about their kitchens and cooking utensils becoming black with soot from traditional stoves. In a large number of areas, consumption of fuel is also an issue. Women also felt that they spent a lot of time cooking, leaving little time for other activities in and outside the house.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Market development was done largely through campaigns including Self Help Group meetings and disseminating information through banners in prominent locations and pamphlets among others methods.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

The stove can be built and used in all types of houses and with various types of biomass fuels. The use of a mould to build the stoves ensures that the stove design is maintained.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

Tests have been done in a few households using improved stoves. These have shown reduction in carbon monoxide content in the indoor air.
