International Energy Initiative (IEI)

Mission

The main objective of IEI is to promote initiate, strengthen and advance the efficient production and use of energy for sustainable development. IEI's strategy involves: - focusing on developing countries; - disseminating an approach to energy, in which the level and quality of energy services is taken as the measure of development, rather than the magnitude of energy consumption and supply; - improving energy services through end-use efficiency measures and the increased use of environmentally cleaner new and renewable energy technologies; - addressing policies, regulation, institutions, financing and management issues to promote sustainable energy practices; - initiating and strengthening capability in energy analysis, information, advocacy, and implementation in developing countries.
While our research and activities have earlier been in the electricity sector and the fields of renewable technologies and energy efficiency, we are now working on extending energy services integrated with other necessities, including improved livelihood.

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

For further information please refer to our website www.iei-asia.org. Our initiatives have extended from the village-level (e.g. community biogas plants), to state and country-level projects (e.g. least-cost electricity planning) and to international co-operative endeavours (for example, public benefits in electricity reform).

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

We have not addressed these, so far, but would like to consider them in our study of the prospects for cleaner cooking options.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We plan to conduct surveys in order to elicit the people's perspectives on cooking fuels and devices, particularly the factors (such as affordability, accessibility, etc.) leading to the current usage pattern. We will also obtain information regarding the problems of supply and distribution. Based on analyses of the demand and supply data gathered, we would like estimate the markets for improved options, as well as the facilitating mechanisms (finance, subsidies, etc.) through which these could be adopted in different time frames (near, medium and long-term).

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We have not yet worked on standardization, but are interested in these norms for the purpose of comparing alternatives.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

We have been using secondary data on these aspects and are interested in obtaining more information and analyses from other studies.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

At present, we would like to share information on clean cooking alternatives. We have experience in analyses. At a later date, we would like to involve the partners in meetings/workshops through which facilitating policies and other ways forward could be drawn up.
