Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

We are currently planning 12 pilot interventions in Uganda over the course of 12 months that will include sensitization, awareness and microbusiness development activities aimed at reducing indoor air pollution and dependence on traditional fuels and building a sustainable clean energy infrastructure.

The interventions will take place at the sub-county level in rural areas and should have an initial direct impact on about 20-25,000 households with incomes less than $3 per day.

Each project area will be monitored and evaluated to assess challenges faced and lessons learned so that at the conclusion of the pilot we can develop best practices and lessons learned for future replication and scaling.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Demonstrations, awareness and sensitization activities will be used to begin a dialogue with the communities to create interest in cleaner and more efficient cooking and lighting alternatives (solar cooking and lighting and more efficient stoves) and increase awareness about the benefits of reducing traditional fuel consumption.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Through community awareness activities and the development of micro energy enterprises, we hope to mobilize a broad cross section of the community and create a self-sustained supply infrastructure for the distribution of alternative technologies.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

None to date. We plan on working with research institutions and other organizations to offer a range of quality products.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

At the beginning of each intervention, we would like to document a baseline from which we can measure improvements and success in reducting indoor air pollution and improving overall health. We are interested in more information about different monitoring techniques, standards and processes.
