Centre for Health and Environment Conservation Nepal (CHEC Nepal)

Mission

CHEC Nepal is a social motive regional level organization working with the rural and urban community for their livelihood promotion and enhancement through dissemination of alternative/renewable energy technologies, agro-forestry, health and indoor air quality. The Mission of the organization is "Technology transfer to CBOs and local organizations for economic, social and organizational development by identification and mobilization of local resources". The Goal of the organization is "To assist in poverty reduction and social development through sustainable management of health and environment" in rural and in urban areas. It extends and replicates the technology relevant and affordable for rural and urban community. Currently, it is working with tribe communities and disadvantaged households for their holistic development through marketing and installation of renewable energy technologies and health related program in Nepal's Terai region. Till the date, it has installed several improved cook stoves, bio-gas plants and briquette production units for the livelihood promotion and to reduce indoor air pollution. The organization is organized and conducted by forestry, health, sociology and engineering experts. To support in the conservation and development of national forest of Terai region by introducing and replicating appropriate technologies of alternative/renewable energies is the Motto of the organization.

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

The organization has targeted to make every household better on a level of IAQ in its working region. it has targeted to women and children as an implementing unit of beneficiaries where women are the direct target communities and the children are the indirect target communities. At least 10,000 improved stoves have to be installed in the working locations of the organization in collaboration of other supports from National Implementing Organization of Nepal.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Although there are some social barriers towards acceptance of improved technologies in the kitchen, the organization implements socially accepted technologies. It implements package programs to raise awareness level of the community people and then supports to install the relevant and appropriate options for their kitchen.


Market development for improved cooking technologies:

CHEC Nepal has developed and established functional market networking with various private companies and individual distributors and retailers in accessible cities. Most of the companies are involved in manufacturing, installation and distribution of improved cooking technologies from urban to rural areas in technical support of CHEC Nepal.


Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

By getting the regular feedback and suggestions, we involve in R&D and make the technology standard familiar for use. We get lab support from national authority and promotion support from Alternative Energy Promotion Centre/Energy Sector Assisstance Program.


Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

The organization uses practical mechanisms in monitoring of the technologies to ensure on its long-term use, impact and result. On the basis of the report, the organization formulates further dissemination plan and modality for the existing and some discovered new technologies for cooking and heating. In this line, the staff of the organization gets learning and sharing through different national and international exposures.
