Lao Institute for Renewable Energy (LIRE)

Mission

LIRE is a Social Professional Non-Profit Organisation dedicated to the sustainable development of a self sufficient renewable energy sector in Lao PDR and the improvement of natural ressources use. The institute offers agronomical, technological and socio-economic research services, and works to provide free public resources. LIRE strives to support the development of the country by exploring commercially-viable means to establish long-term alternatives to conventional practices.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

We are a local Lao Non Profit Organisation, NPO, registered under the Prime Minister's Office in Laos, working widely in renewable energy and the local partner for many organisations. With indoor air quality we are active with various ICS programs in Laos, also we are actively researching new and innovative approaches to reducing chronic indoor air pollution in Laos appropriate to the Lao local cultural context. We are also working actively to help Laos develop in a low carbon way.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

With an urbanisation rate of only around 30%, LIRE very often works necessarily with small rural communities with limited access to services. We usually work with hill tribe communities and technology transfer to people with limited education levels and in close cooperation with government agencies.


Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We actively evaluate and document the market development in Lao-PDR.


Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

We are eager to bring in international best practice to Laos, verify it works in the Lao context, and distribute it widely throughout Laos.


Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

We have actively participated in Monitoring and Evaluation on a very wide range of studies.
