Stakeholder Consultation - DRC, Improved Cook Stoves Program

date:
December 17, 2010

The Stakeholder Consultation of the Voluntary Gold Standard Programme of Activities entitled “Democratic Republic of the Congo, Improved Cook Stoves Program” will be held on the 17th of December 2010 at OCHA in Kinshasa, DRC.

The objective of the project is to support the distribution of improved cook stoves in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of life of the communities in DRC.

Carbon Clear is working with Mercy Corps to develop the first project activity in Goma, North Kivu where 8,500 improved cook stoves have been distributed. The project helps to reduce the consumption of wood, protect the Virunga National Park, the opportunity costs arising from collecting the wood and improve the quality of life of the communities.

The intention is to expand the project to other regions of DRC in the years to come. The Programme of Activities will give a framework to develop the project where new activities can be added easily. The groups targeted are poor communities living in rural and urban areas as well as schools and other institutions that don’t use improved cook stoves.
