Rural Energy and Climate Initiative Workshop and Marketplace

date:
July 11, 2011 - July 13, 2011

The Rural Energy & Climate Initiative is a groundbreaking movement inspired by key actors who were motivated by the need for rural energy actors to access a fair and equitable carbon market. The Rural Energy and Climate Initiative (RECI) mission is to:
• elicit discussions to redefine carbon markets rules for development and poverty alleviation;
• build capacity for low carbon project developers to support access to carbon finance;
• unite development practitioners to promote a common position, and to work to put these issues on the agenda at international negotiations;
• mobilize new and additional financial streams (specifically carbon finance), and ensure that they are delivered to rural energy projects effectively and transparently;
• Support developing countries to build national mitigation actions.

Nexus-Carbon for Development has been selected to lead this initiative, and brings with it expertise in carbon finance and experience in project development through its member organisations. During the coming months, through the Rural Energy & Climate Initiative Nexus will also promote its vision on how to modify and ease access to carbon finance for its partners (existing and potential).

Building on momentum from successful discussions at the kick off workshop in Phnom Penh, in March this year, Nexus will be holding a second meeting in July. This will be an opportunity to showcase the initiatives which have been developed following activities in March, and also to bring new actors into the programme to develop the initiative. - Nexus, Carbon for Development is an alliance of pro-poor project developers whose shared vision is that the carbon market should serve both climate change and poverty alleviation in a sustainable way. As a global alliance of social ventures, Nexus acts as a peer-to-peer carbon services platform, providing awareness raising, capacity building, carbon project development, and carbon asset management. Nexus builds on its members' expertise to create synergies, streamline procedures and share risks, reducing transaction costs and time to market. www.nexus-c4d.org
- The blue moon fund is financing this initiative, and by building on their strategic rural energy work, they will implement the project with Nexus. The blue moon fund seeks to improve the human condition by changing the relationship between human consumption and the natural world. Specifically, it supports new economic, cultural, and environmental approaches to resource use, energy use and urban development. www.bluemoonfund.org
