Ethio Resource Group PLC

Mission

Our aim is to provide high quality services to clean cookstove promoters and developers in terms of product development, dissemination strategies, and feasibility assessment. We also envision to establish stove testing centers (performance and IAP levels) at the national regional level and also a national network for those engaged in promotion and development/business of clean cooking technologies.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

We assist our local partners in developing improved cookstoves that are efficient, clean, affordable and safe. We also trained several clean cookstove producers in the country. We are also working on institutional cooking energy improvement in social institutions including rural schools with feeding programs(in Afar Regional State), and few Universities and prisons in other parts of the country. We have also prepared environmental booklets for school children to increase their awareness about the environment, energy efficiency, and indoor air pollution reduction. We are planning to scale up these efforts at national level.

Our plan is also to build capacities of national regional organizations whose activities are related to promotion of clean cooking and indoor air pollution reduction. This includes networking with relevant organizations and establishment of basic stove testing facilities (for performance and emission levels) at national regional state level.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

In most rural areas fuel and stoves are not commercial commodities. Firewood is collected and a open fire is used to burn it. Selling improved/clean cookstoves and clean fuels is a challenge as households are not accustomed to paying for such utility. Usually in rural areas cooking takes place in living rooms which are very poorly ventilated. In some rural areas, particularly in wet seasons, households also want to keep smoke in the house to keep insects away and dry the roof (i.e. in thatched roof houses). As consultants, we are providing technical support to promoters and businesses in design and product development for affordable and safe improved cookstoves, and to evaluate cookstoves for performance, IAP level, and safety.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

Market segmentation by settlement (such as urban and rural) and income level helps both users and businesses to benefit as products can be tailor made and priced as to meet the needs of each group in communities.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Technology standardization is critically important especially to ensure the expected performance/efficiency of stoves in mass production.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

As part of our stove testing service, we evaluate cook stoves both for performance/efficiency and IAP emission levels. For the purpose of comparison of results from different part of the world, it is important for everybody to follow an agreed standard for measuring IAP levels, performance and safety measures.
