ECOLIFE Foundation

Mission

Mission: To protect wildlife and wild places, while improving the quality of life for the World’s most disadvantaged people. We implement sustainable humanitarian solutions to ecological problems.

Vision: To be a leader in the conservation and the production of sustainable food, fuel and water in biologically significant habitats.

We continue to construct hundreds of Patsari stoves in Michoacan, Mexico where we improve indoor air quality and protect natural resources. We have similar programs in Kenya and are now launching a program in Uganda.

Other interests include rural aquaponics and and rain water harvesting programs.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

Mexico - Patsari Stove program.
Our short term goal is to build 1,500-2,000 stoves per year and to plant 500,000 trees per year.
Kenya - To continue to provide rural schools with vented fuel efficient cooking systems, safe student and teacher housing and rain water systems.
Sustainable charcoal program - finalizing design on a system that will allow economical community production of charcoal from agricultural waste.
Aquaponics - Working in Bwindi, Uganda on sustainable food through aquaponics and rain water harvest.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Each of our program demands and has a strong local partner to facilitate our navigation of social and cultural barriers.

This is an incredibly important issue. We used to promote our stoves in Mexico as a way to save butterflies and failed miserably. Now with better local support and promotion of the stoves as something to protect their health and reduce work loads, our stove builders are as popular as rock stars!

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

We are always expanding our market and our strategies. We do only a small amount of research and development and therefore are more focused on the promotion of proven techniques with light refinement to fit the cultural or physical situation. We believe that promotion of safe and healthy stoves that also help protect our natural environment.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Some standardization of techniques and measurements are essential but we must always remember the diverse ways and places that programs will be established and flexibility required for success.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

We do not actually do air quality tests as we implement programs with existing data. We do follow up with families with post-installation interviews on health changes and related information.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

We will continue to work on all fronts to promote cleaner indoor air and safer, more efficient cook stoves and techniques. We will market and promote these at every opportunity.
