Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

D&E will partner with public and private sector stakeholders to foster discussions on appropriate technological responses to Haiti’s energy and environmental challenges, of particular interest will be trying to get policy makers to discourage or prohibit the use of inefficient traditional stoves. To achieve this goal, we will initiate a series of forums and meetings under the themes of “rescuing our environment,” “safer ways to cook,” and “energy solutions for tomorrow.” We will make public announcements of the meetings and invite the public to participate. However, formal invitations will be sent to all relevant government agencies, local NGOs, grassroots organizations, churches, private sector organizations etc. to be part of panels and presentations. We will encourage all stakeholders to voice their opinions and propose solutions. All ideas and proposed solutions will be cataloged and made available to policy makers. We hope this inclusive and participative approach will prompt policy makers to intervene through changes in laws and policy which will result in the reform of the energy sector and the banning of inefficient stoves.
Additionally, D&E will collaborate with local NGOs working with different local women’s groups to run seminars about safe cooking practices such as the danger of inadequate ventilation, safe disposal of used charcoal and proper techniques for putting out fires.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The stove market in Haiti is highly fragmented. Local market based projects with strong quality control procedures are a must for market development.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

There is a need to create a system where stoves can be locally tested and labeled as standard once they meet certain guidelines. In addition, there is a need to develop clear manufacturing guidelines taking into consideration the local cooking habits and customs to guide efficient stove developers.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

It would be important to create a monitoring plan by surveying users kitchens and recording the level of air pollution before and after they switch to cleaner burning stoves.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

D&E will work with stakeholders to develop standard guidelines for manufacturing, monitoring and quality control processes to guide future efficient stove producers. We will encourage the public and all interested stakeholders to start efficient stove manufacturing plants. We hope to work with other stakeholders to create an agency that would monitor the development and propagation of efficient stove manufacturing.
