Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal

Mission

CRT/N has a vision about communities living commendable quality of life through use of or capability to develop environmentally sound rural/appropriate technologies from optimal use of locally available skills and resources. Its mission is to Develop, promote and disseminate environmentally sound rural/appropriate technologies and strengthen capability of rural communities in creating better opportunities through use of local resources to improve their livelihood conditions. CRT/N has extensive experience and expertise in the following areas: Development and Promotion of Appropriate Rural and Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs): Improved cook stoves for households and institutions, Improved water mill, Solar cookers, Solar dryers, Briquette, Gasifiers, Family hydro, Motor dynamo-based family hydro, Other appropriate technologies. Promotion of micro-enterprises based on RETs. Cross-cutting issues: Gender mainstreaming, Poverty reduction, Climate change, Indoor air pollution. So far, CRT/N has disseminated more than 150,000 improved cook stoves in rural Nepal. Along with the stoves, it has promotied kitchen management practices which effectily contribute to indoor air pollution. Currently, it is promoting improved cook stoves in 12 districts under the National Biomass Program, and also implementing Action Program for Strengthening Improved Cook Stove Network in Nepal.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

Some social/cultural values are associated with cook stoves. Nontheless, they have not posed serious barriers to promotion of improved cook stoves.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The improved cook stoves currently being promoted are not sold off-the-shelf; they are constructed on site. As such, market development bascially depends upon users awareness, which has to be promoted at community and household level.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

Improved cook stoves are constructed on the site by trained promoters following standard design parameters. Howerver, it is difficult to maintain quality.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

As Improved cook stoves are constructed on the site, monitoring process requires visiting user households, which is time and resource consuming. Monitoring of indoor air pollution and its health impacts has not been a regular practice.
