IWA Discussion Questions

The proposed rating system will evaluate a stove’s performance in the areas of fuel efficiency, indoor air quality, emissions of particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO), and safety. In addition, future effort will include climate impact, durability, and field testing.

The document lists proposed bookend values – with the low end correlating with a three stone fire and the high end correlating with the World Health Organization’s current (but evolving) air quality guidelines. The tiers of performance then fall within the bookends in each area of performance.

It is proposed that the IWA apply to all types of stoves/fuels with the understanding that current protocols do not adequately cover all stove types – for example – heating stoves, plancha/griddle stoves, and batch-fed stoves.
