Our Focus
We are currently working with about 1000 smallholder farmers in the Meru region of Tanzania to cultivate jatropha. The seeds when harvested will be pressed to produce oil. The oil will be used to run diesel generators to produce and supply off-grid electricity to the local community. The waset seed cake will be further pressed into briquettes for use by the smallholder farmers displacing firewood usage. Proceeds from anticipated carbon credits from this project will finance the purchase of efficient biomass stoves for the smallholder farmers.
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
Our main partner GTZ has been active in Eastern Africa now for about 30 years producing and disseminating stoves. They have acquired appropriate skills over these years dealing with local communities' skepticism about new fuels and stoves.
Sustainable firewood production is forecast to decline in Kenya during the next 20 years. This will lead to an increase in the distance people have to trek to get firewood. The production of briquettes and stoves package will appeal to the local market and we are on the ground developing this market.
We at CO2focus are not very familiar with technology standardisation, but our partner GTZ does have this experience.
We are wanting in this aspect.
