CHINANSI is an abbreviation for Centre for Human rights and Institute for National Social Initiatives. The grassroots organisation was founded in 2007 by people who are moved by the issues that affect development in Balaka and the entire Malawi nation. It was registered in 2008 by the Registrar General under the 1962 Trustees Act: Registration number: TR/INC 4121 and also became an active member of the Council of Non-Governmental Organisations of Malawi (CONGOMA).
We exist to mentor the vulnerable communities in sustainable agriculture and food security, HIV/AIDS and sexual reproductive health and environmental management initiatives.

Our Focus
The Chinansi Foundation developed a CDM improved cooking stoves project which is at validation stage. This project, among many others, has a target to distribute 40,000 improved cook-stoves to rural households in Machinga district in Malawi. The Chinansi Foundation also has an initiative involving small scale rural solar lighting (LED lights replacing kerosene lamps in the grass-roots areas).
Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas
It is expected that switching to ICS would pose a smaller barrier than switching to technologies using other types of fuel, such as LPG and electricity. However, the use of traditional stoves still imposes a very strong adoption barrier, which could result in the continuation of the use of traditional cooking methods. Overcoming this inertia requires a significant amount of sensitisation, marketing, demonstration and personal recommendation.
Chinansi has experience with rocket stoves which use a combustion chamber to emit the gases. At present we have branded what we call the "Mtetezi" Rocket Stove, which is ready for distribution to the communities in Machinaga district in Malawi.
