CEFEMAC

Mission

Disseminating innovative ideas that promote low carbon sustainable development and creating collaborative synergies that enhance research across various environmental and social sectors including healthcare, environmental protection, forestry, rural and community development and climate change resilience and adaptation.

Currently in the process of developing a Programme of Activity under the CDM Carbon Finance Initiative to promote the dissemination of efficient cook stoves within the North West Region of Cameroon with a population of 1.8 million inhabitants. Recent research has indicated that the 87% of the regions energy fuel for cooking comes from firewood. The use of firewood on the traditional 3-stone fire places within poorly ventilated kitchens results in detrimental health effects to women and children following prolonged exposure to soot. CEFEMAC (Centre for Environmental Management and Change) seeks to work with existing initiatives through NGOS on the ground (Centre for Alternative Technologies and Greeny Cameroon) to make its vision reality in providing cleaner alternatives to cooking and thus reducing indoor air pollution.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

- Dissemination of best practice in environmental management
- Improving quality of life through the provision of efficient cook stoves (currently use 3-stone fires and charcoal stoves)
- Raising awareness in climate change and disseminating resilience and adaptation strategies

The target population will be women in the Bamenda (capital city) and rural environs. Target is to ensure that EVERY WOMAN in the North West Region who uses firewood as main source of fuel is provided with a cleaner method of cooking within the next 15 years.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

- National administrative bottle necks in the CDM process
- Lack of awareness of benefits and opportunities in CDM amongst local NGOs
- Lack of proven technology in locally produced efficient cook stoves

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

I am interested in innovative insights in strategic development of PoAs in the biomass sector and information on available technologies in efficient cook stoves.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

I am interested in information on available cook stoves, determination of energy efficiency of locally manufactured cook stoves and case studies of cook stove adaptation to align with local cultural customs.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

I am interested in monitoring techniques and how to optimize efficiency in monitoring.
