Asia-Pacific Research Center for Indoor Environment

Mission

The Asia-Pacific Research Center for Indoor Environment (APARCIE) is lead by Yoonshin Kim, a prominent pioneer in Korea and internationally for research in the field of Indoor Air Quality. Fields of research include measuring harmful indoor pollutants and the active abatement of the hazardous materials. The APARCIE solely contributed to developing numerous air cleaning systems and supported documents for the health risk assessment and effects of the systems. Lately the APARCIE has focused heavily on Asbestos and and the Sick House Syndrome, balancing the economic criteria and the indoor air quality that has consistently been a major concern of the research center. The APARCIE is now ready to offer these extensive studies and experiences toward developing countries and be a positive add to improving indoor air quality in those countries.

Our Focus

Primary Initiatives, Target Populations, and Scope of Work:

The APARCIE will initiate data collection studies in developing countries such as Mongolia this summer and Laos later this winter. This data will be used to start the analysis of current health conditions for these countries. They will use the data to develop a better protocol for upcoming research.

Our Experience And Interest In The Four PCIA Central Focus Areas

Social/Cultural barriers to using traditional fuels and stoves:

After the base studies of the current indoor air quality and health conditions, the APARCIE will co-develop the proper cookstove in cooperation with Woongjin Coway. Woongjin Coway is one of the leading air purification product companies. Woongjin is supporting the APARCIE to aggressively improve the cooking and heating condition of Mongolia and Nepal by applying the cultural aspect to the actual building of the stove and heating units. Being in the same continent, we are expected to relate easily to these issues. We also believe that education of those who will be using the stove is more crucial. The APARCIE will divide tasks including raising public awareness.

Market development for improved cooking technologies:

The APARCIE is currently in a research and development stage but will later move to supplying the stove and heating unit through non profit organizations.

Technology standardization for cooking, heating and ventilation:

The APARCIE will work closely with existing organizations to meet the monitoring standards and efficiencies.

Indoor air pollution exposure and health monitoring:

As the APARCIE develops the stove and heating unit, they will be cooperating with certified companies for monitoring. Woongjin and Hanyang University are the prime partners.

Our Contribution to the Partnership

We will actively assess information from the PCIA. We will be happy to share research progress and results. If any partners of the PCIA seek our advantage of being in Asia, the APARCIE will be always be accessible. Academically and practically we would like to participate.
